Hofner was founded in the year
1887. It was started by one man in Germany. They made many
different stringed instruments including guitars and basses.
Hofner helped make rock and roll history when a man by the
name of Paul McCartney chose the 500/1 as his bass of choice.
Over time this electric bass guitar became known as the Beatles
Bass. It looked unique. It had a body shapes like a violin
and two pickups.
The first Hofner 500/1
was introduced in 1956. Paul Mccartney used two different
ones both of which were the 500/1 model. One was a 1961 model
and the other was a 1963 model. They look identical except
for the placement of the pickups. One had pickups mounted
closer to the neck and the other had pickups mounted closer
to the bridge.
Although the 500/1 is probably the most well known Hofner
electric bass guitar, they made many other models. The
500/2 club
bass is a another vintage Hofner bass that most collectors
would love to get their hands on. Hofner started manufacturing
the 500/2 Club bass in the year 1964. They stopped manufacturing
this model in the year 1970. It has a body that looks very
much like a Gibson and that is where the similarities stop.
Today Hofner makes reissues of these two electric bass guitars
and a few others. These reissues are as close as you can get
to the original models but collectors really wan to get their
hands on those earlier vintage models. There are usually plenty
to find at auction and they will come at a price. Any vintage
Hofner bass would make a great investment. They helped to
shape rock and roll history as we know it. |
