In 1952 a man named Alfred
Dronge founded the Guild guitar company. Together with good
friend George Mann they set out to make electric and acoustic
guitars in New York. They quickly outgrew their warehouse
and needed more space to produce their popular acoustic blues
and folk guitars.
Guild went through many tough times and is now owned by guitar
giant Fender. In 1965 Guild introduced it's first electric
bass guitar, the Guild
Starfire Bass. This would become one of the most
successful electric bass guitars made by Guild.
One year later in 1966, Guild introduces the Jetstar.
It was the companion bass to the Guild Thunderbird. It can
be difficult to find one of these. It's body style was something
different for it's time.
In 1970 Guild brought the Guild
JS Bass to the market. It looks very familiar.
It's body shape and design looks much like the popular Gibson
EB Series. There were two models available. The JS1 had one
pickup and the JS II has two pickups.
In 1977 Guild brings two great bass guitars. The B-301
and the B-302.
These were a replacement to the JS series and the bodies were
made differently. There were also the B-301A and the B-302A.
Both had bodies made from Ash instead of mahogany.
Next in line was the Guild M85. This can
be one difficult bass to find if you are collecting them.
It looks very similar to a Gibson but that is where the similarities
stop. This bass sounds great and has an unbelievable tone.
Guild was busy in 1982. They unleashed several bass guitars
into the market. The first was the SB series which consisted
of : SB-201, SB-202, SB-203,
and the SB-502E. They also introduced the
X series. This consisted on the X701 and
the X702. Take one look at these electric
bass guitars and you will see where they got their names.
